108 contestants of all ages took part in the fifteenth Annual Sporting Challenge on a surprisingly dry evening on the night before the Village Show.
Each team of four took part in trials set by the Tennis, Cricket, Bowls and Football clubs, with the addition of Golf to complete the challenge. Points were awarded according to each team’s position in each event – ie the winner of the bowls event scored 1 point, second place scored 2 etc and each team accumulated points according to their position in each of the five sports. The overall winning team was therefore the team with the least number of points over all five events.
This year’s winning team was a late entry that was totally surprised and overcome by their victory. ‘The Girls’ won by coming first in the Cricket event and backed this up with consistent top ten positions in all the other events. Congratulations to the four team members: Freya Pearce, Georgia Revens, Louise Hannah and Hattie Pickering. This is also the second year running that the trophy is held by a member of the Hannah family.
‘The Cooper Clan’ came second, closely followed by ‘It’s not me…It’s you’.
It was notable that ‘Team Hopeless’ came a surprising 13th overall despite having won the Football and Golf events - but they do need to improve their Cricket and Bowls skills before next year.
Bill Barclay, who recently stepped down as Secretary of the Sports Club, presented Olympic gold medals to the winners of each sport and the Richard Watkins Memorial Cup to the overall winners, who also secured their place on the Roll Of Honour.
Many thanks to the hard-working Football club who provided the BBQ, to the Cricket club for manning the beer tent, and also to our MC for the night, Rob Cree.
Proceeds to this event go towards the upkeep of the Sports Pavilion.
