The Sporting Challenge event took place as always on the eve of the Village Show. Of course we had no idea then that this was going to be the last time the Sports Pavilion, as we knew it, would in use. Every year mention is made that the proceeds from this event go towards the upkeep of the Sports Pavilion – this year it will be just the start of the fund raising process to rebuild our pavilion which has been central to sporting life in this village for the last 27 years.
30 teams of four took part in trials set by the Tennis, Cricket, Bowls and Football clubs, with the addition of the golf event to complete the challenge. Medals were awarded to the winning team for each sport, and a trophy presented to the overall Challenge winners, based on their average position in all five sports.
Congratulations to this year’s winning team, ’Bald Ambition’ who came top by securing second place in the tennis and bowls and third place in the football. The team members Mark and James Millward and Peter and Alfie Elliott are pictured below with George Whitt, Chairman of the Sports Club, who presented the awards.
The Foozers (Finn, Felix, Kate and Patrick O’Callaghan) might have been expecting to be the evening’s winners as they did so well to come top in both the cricket and bowls events, but sadly their performance in the tennis and golf events prevented this from happening. More practice required for next year!
Well done to Mini Beast (William Christianson; Sally and Robert Atkinson; Brody Taylor), one of the younger teams to participate, who won the football section in style
The Armitage Shanks team of Sam Barrington, Charlie Aspden, Ledian Dushaj and Jenson Brown demonstrated their controlled chipping skills to win the golf event.
It was the tennis event which created an exciting finish this year as four teams were involved in a tie-breaker to decide first place (very appropriate for tennis) and this was won by the appropriately named team of Tie-Breaker (Tony and Sue Alexander; Helen Wilson and Steve Adcock).
Many thanks to the hard-working football club who provided the BBQ, to the cricket club for manning the beer tent, and also to our MC for the night, Rob Cree.
